Biography

Life-long crocheter Barbara Hillery Van Elsen founded the NYC Crochet Guild, through which she became a CYCA Certified Crochet Teacher.  She loves the precision of pattern testing and model making; her models appear in several well-known crochet books.

As a fiber artist, her freeform pieces have been exhibited in Australia and NYC, where she recently lectured on Crocheted Freeform Lace at the Museum of Arts and Design.

She contributed to, helped organize and teach workshops on and helped install the NY Reef of the Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef currently on exhibit at the Winter Garden of the World Financial Center in NYC.

Barbara is currently a teacher in the Craft Yarn Council’s Certified Instructor Program and has taught a wide range of classes from Beginning Crochet to Freeform to groups all over the US.  Her focus is on techniques and concepts, so that her students have the tools to crochet precisely what they intend to.
